Many young men on welfare

By The Holland Times Tuesday 01 June 2010, 12:06

The number of people receiving welfare has gone up over ten thousand in the first three months of this year. Figures form the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) revealed the increase on 31 May.

In the first quarter of the year, 290,000 people registered for welfare. The largest group receiving these benefits are 27-year-old men.

As of late, the economy has been slow and thus young people are being dismissed, says the CBS.

Because young people have a shorter employment history, they are eligible for shorter unemployment benefits. Furthermore, CBS reveals that sectors where women are the majority workers have been badly hit by the crisis.
