Ov-card promotions go mobile with iPad

Mobile carriers plan to release discounted iPad devices to students in efforts to generate more ov-chip card activations. A spokesperson announced the drive Monday.

Students have been able to travel using the new card since early January, however only two-thirds of students have adopted the card. Education Minister Ronald Plasterk (PvdA) had expected the card to be used by all students by early January.

Due to wide-spread problems with the card, activation numbers have been low. Plasterk has said he will not set a new date until the problems are fixed. ''Students should not suffer from technical problems," he said.

Until then, the iPad promotion is meant to persuade students to activate ov-cards in order to compete for prizes. These include all expenses paid ski trips, as well as chances to win other Apple products.

Mobile carriers involved in the initiative plan to send teams to universities with fliers and sign-up information. Both new ov-card users and old will have a chance to win the iPad prizes
